SEO has a reputation for being slow and technical. It doesn't have to be. 80% of ranking gains for a new site come from 10 fixes you can do in a weekend — no developer required for most.
1. Set up Google Search Console & submit your sitemap
Verify ownership, submit sitemap.xml, request indexing for your top 5 pages.
2. Write one strong title tag per page
Formula: Primary keyword + secondary intent + brand.
"Pest Control in Bhubaneswar — Same-Day Service · GreenShield" beats "Welcome to GreenShield Services."
3. Add a meta description for every page
120–160 characters, written to earn the click, not stuff keywords.
4. Fix your H1 — one per page
One H1 with the primary keyword, matching the title tag tone.
5. Compress every image to under 200 KB
Run images through TinyPNG or Squoosh before uploading.
6. Add alt text to every image
Describe what the image shows in plain English.
7. Set up internal linking from day one
Every new page should link from at least two existing pages using descriptive anchor text.
8. Make sure your site loads under 2.5 seconds
Run a PageSpeed Insights test. Fix uncompressed images and render-blocking scripts first.
9. Add structured data
For local businesses: LocalBusiness schema. For articles: BlogPosting schema.
10. Get 3 quality backlinks before week's end
- Local Chamber of Commerce directory.
- Industry association directory.
- A guest post on a niche blog.
Bookmark this checklist. Block one Saturday. Get the boring foundation right — then write content with confidence.
